The V.C. Andrews Movement / Reading Challenge

Check out everything I've done for the challenge so far here.

Taren and Steph said, “Know what? We need a way to spice up this new year.” So they both came to the simultaneous conclusion that we’re making this a themed year—V.C. Andrews (hereafter VCA) will proliferate in their blogs. Which goes to say they’ll do a VCA post once in a while, but it’ll be an ongoing thing; their regular blog activities will continue to ensue the majority of the time, don’t worry.

But wait, that doesn’t work if most of their (more so Steph’s than Taren’s) readership isn’t familiar with the novels, does it? They’ll be doing recaps, essay-style posts, so on so forth (way funnier than it sounds, promise), and they don’t want to alienate anyone. Both do hope to draw in new people, but also keep their oldies (and—don’t let anyone know this but—besties).

So! They contemplated. And…! Since everyone’s got these reading challenges going on, THEY WILL, TOO.

Henceforth:

How will it work?
It is generally understood that there are 12 months in a year, yes? Well, this is a year-long thing, but only 11 books have to be read, one a month, at the end. You get a freebie month somewhere, whenever you so choose.

Because Taren feels the newer books suck ass, we’ll be limiting the eligible titles to VCA’s earliest series—Dollanganger, Casteel, Cutler, Landry and Logan—and her sole standalone, My Sweet Audrina. Here’s the list:

Dollanganger series
Flowers in the Attic
Petals on the Wind
If There Be Thorns
Seeds of Yesterday
Garden of Shadows

Casteel series
Heaven
Dark Angel
Fallen Hearts
Gates of Paradise
Web of Dreams

Cutler series
Dawn
Secrets of the Morning
Twilight’s Child
Midnight Whispers
Darkest Hour

Landry series
Ruby
Pearl in the Mist
All That Glitters
Hidden Jewel
Tarnished Gold

Logan series
Melody
Heart Song
Unfinished Symphony
Music in the Night
Olivia

This gives you a pool of 26 books, and you only have to choose 11 of them. You can read two complete series and My Sweet Audrina, or you can jump around, divide and conquer, whatever. It’s your choice.

How do I participate?
You make a challenge post on your blog like you would with anything else, enumerating your progress. Make sure to link to THIS post on either Steph’s blog or Taren’s blog, whichever you found it in. Also, feel free to use the banner if you need some sort of illustration. And if you feel like being extra awesome, you can even mention it on your sidebar…

Here are some images you can use. Please host them on your own. If you use the smaller ones without our links, make sure to include those in there so people can be directed here! More will come later!

Why should I participate?
Well, firstly because both Taren and Steph are, and they’re awesome, and this is random, and with awesome + random, you can’t go wrong.

Secondly, because there are two types of trashy in this world: the good and the bad. (A third, lesser known, type is Breaking Dawn, but let’s not go there.) V.C. Andrews—if only in these aforementioned series—is decidedly the good kind. You’d be exploring these books with a group of people, and by pacing yourself slowly, they wouldn’t fall to the wayside to be read “someday.”

Thirdly, they’re cheap. Print that list out and go to any used bookstore and we guarantee you can walk out with at least three of those books. Bonus points if you get a keyhole cover—Melissa Walker would be very jealous of you.

Find out more:
Taren did an excellent and highly readable post on the VCA pattern, sans spoilers, here on her blog.

Also check out the Complete VCA site. Beware of spoilers on the book pages, though.

What now?
If you want to participate, leave a comment below. We want to have a comprehensive list of everyone taking part. If you don't have a blog, not to worry! Leave a comment anyway, or you can email either one of us.

You should have heard me laughing when i was reading this. The title and icons are especially awesome. Any change for a special alea level (one book?)

Taren said...

No way, missy! You might not have time to do all 11, but you totally have to try to do one every once in awhile. Ones you've already read (if any) totally count as long as you blog about it.

Alea said...

Ooooh see that's the thing about me, I can't join something unless i can do it 1,000 percent! Boooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I haven't read any yet either :( I did just post one of the tiny buttons on my blog to be a supporter! *bats eyelashes*

You can easily read 11 in one dull weekend though it might be difficult to keep the plots straight.

Alea said...

I suck at staying focused, I wish I was as good as Anon! It's a miracle if I can even read 100 pages most weekends! And most of my weekends are dull so I SUCK!

Taren said...

Aww poor Alea! How about secretly reading one every once in awhile? Then if it's like October and you're up to 8 or whatever you can join late or if you haven't kept up we can pretend like this conversation never existed. Anonymous is right (and obviously a proflific reader!) -they're crazy quick reads. This message will self destruct in 3....2...1...

Taren! That is perfect for me! I really wanted to be a part of it but couldn't commit without knowing I could actually do it. Consider me a secret challenge participant! Now I need to figure out where I can get a few more titles to possibly complete the series I have a few from!

Oh, I am so in. I read Flowers In The Attic and Petals on The Wind. Now I have a reason to re-read them and finally finish the series. Yay!

Amee said...

I already said I was in on Steph's blog but I thought I'd say it here too. ;)

Bridget said...

I don't have my own blog :( But count me in to read along and comment. Taren and Steph, you two are goddesses to get this started. I can't wait to start!

Thanks to all of you who're going to be doing this -blog or not, it sooo doesn't matter!

Melissa, we were hoping you would see this. We totally remember your love for FITA and keyholes!

Melissa Walker said...

Doing a vlog now and will post about this asap. Yay!

I've already read them all, but I'd be willing to revisit a few. ^_^ It sounds like fun. And it'll give me motivation to continue with the VCA Theatre. ^_^

sharonanne said...

Awesomeness. I read all of these back in the day. I love good trash.

Leigh said...

Okay, Taren, I'm in. This is a good one.

I so want to re-read the "Flowers" series to remind myself of how much I dug it when I was younger and I really want to try some of the others. I don't normally do these challenge things but Kimberly Derting just posted about the 09 challenge she's doing and made me feel wholly inadequate so I'm succumbing to peer pressure.

Thanks~

Zoealea said...

I'm in. Flowers in the Attic was one of my moms favorite books when she was my age, and I already have three of the Dollanganger books and four of the Casteel books.

sharonanne said...

Here is my post:http://sharonlovesbooksandcats.blogspot.com/2009/01/good-trash-movement.html. It is going to be such fun rereading these books!

I just wanted to let all of you know that you totally rule my world!

I bet u this was totally Taren's idea cos she had the VCA essay thingy earlier this week.

Steph said...

Haha actually, I proposed this idea to Taren. She sent me a ton of VCA for Christmas and since VCA was in the air and what with the new year and all, we sort of decided simultaneously that this would be a year marked with VCA. I said, why don't we do one of those reading challenges thingies? And we worked from there :)

Steph said...

Oh and as PS: that VCA Primer of hers is truly awesome though, eh?

Taren said...

Yep, it is Steph's world and I'm just walking through it I'm afraid! Her idea -I just said yes and inspired her by forcing her to read FITA (which she thankfully loved) and sending her a bunch of the books.

BookChic said...

I will try and do it, but with a job and everything, it's hard for me to actually get around to the review copies I have, let alone any free stuff.

I wonder if there are VCA audio books.... lol

Anyway, once I get all situated with my computer (I'm having to buy a new one), I'll post a vlog with my VCA books. Although I think you won't be pleased, Taren, since I have more of the newer books (which I do/did like) than older. But I'll just probably take the older ones out of the library and read them that way.

And yes, I did say vlog- I have a brand new digital camera that takes videos with sound- yay!

I am definitely participating! I remember reading Flowers in the Attic in Middle School and being totally pissed when I saw the less than stellar movie adaption.

As a young adult librarian who couldn't make it through Twilight, I feel it is my duty to remind myself of the trash I was reading voraciously in middle school. :)

I am there with bells on!

Awesome Challenge! I'm in and here is my post.

Mine are the keyhole covers, but that just means I'm old :P

Hey, what about Gods of Green Mountain? It's one of only eight books written completely by Andrews. And it's not that bad, either, especially for a first work, though there are a number of things disappointing about it just like in most Andrews books I've read. It kind of makes me think of Christopher Pike by way of VC Andrews, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Taren said...

The short answer is we just wanted to include the ones we listed, i.e. the ones I like plus the one Steph is currently reading. That and I actually forgot Gods of Green Mountain existed. They best correspond to the primer I had begun writing before the challenge was even formulated. If someone in the challenge wanted to read Gods of Green Mountain I guess that would be fine. We just wanted to keep it simple, with books that are likely already in people's libraries or easily found in thrift stores.

I'm late with my post but here it is!

I'm a little late to the party, but I'm gonna participate! Can't remember where I first heard about the challenge, but it is right up my trashy-novel-reading alley.

Jess said...

Count me in. I always need an excuse to read some good trash :)

Bard Girl said...

I'm really late to the party but what the hell since I'd love to reread these books. It's been a while.

Robby said...

I am SO late for this BUT I already started my VCA reading spree back at the end of November. So count me in for sure. :)

Anonymous said...

Since I've already read all of her older stuff (my 4th grade teacher was outraged that my mother let me read VCA -- I took If There Be Thorns to school to read at lunch and she said it was "highly inappropriate"), this will be a re-read for me.

Can someone PLEASE smack the publishers of these books and tell them to get the older ones in Ebook format? I am in total love with my Kindle 2 and I would happily buy all of the Dollanganger/Casteel books and My Sweet Audrina (I actually thought it was starting to go downhill with the Cutler series) this second if they were available in Ebooks.

On the subject of Ebooks, have you read Gods of Green Mountain? To me it has the same "flavor" as Steven King's "Eyes of the Dragon" -- a grown-up fairy tale.

Kathryn said...

I don't have a blog, and I know that I'm starting off REALLY late, but I'm totally psyched to do this.

Alexandria said...

I came in this late, and I want to join! I bought the last of the Logan series and swore off any of Neiderman's newer work. It is hideous line borrowing stuff!

i think this is wonderful. i love VCA books. the new ones are not that great, but what can you do. its not VCA writing the new stories she passed away back many years ago. Of the newer books Celeste is very good, its much like Flowers in the Attic.
i love the Flowers in the Attic series. A note to all who wishes to read this series: once you begin to read this series, in order to understand anything at all you must read all 5 books (must read Garden of Shadows last!!!).
The Casteel series is a wonderful read for anyone. i think its a perfect choice for someone who is new with VCA books.
I would like to say i'm in on this challenge, but i've already read every VCA book. I love them that much :)
everyone enjoy reading!!!!

Oh my God, I've been looking for something like this for AGES! Count me in!!!

I'm on my third book now. So far I've read "Twilight's Child", "Petals on the Wind", and now I'm in the middle of "Fallen Hearts". I absolutely love this!!!

sharkcrow said...

Great idea!!!

I am so BUMMED I found this mid-year! I'm going to be all 'retro' and do this next year, rather than just being late and crap :)

Girl That Reads said...

This blog has inspired me to go back and read every single V.C. Andrews book. It's too bad I'm starting right in the middle of the year though!

Taren said...

Don't worry about starting in the middle of the year. We're five months into the year and I've already finished eight books -and that's from pacing myself. They're crazy quick reads and you don't need a challenge to read them (just some aspirin!).

andrea said...

It's June, and I know I'm late. I just found out about this today, and it's exciting! I actually own all of those series and was thinking about re-reading them starting in July.

Crystal said...

Finally i find some people who have joined the V.C Andrews revolution, My mom got me started on these books when i was 13 and i have been avidly reading them ever since, I actually own a copy of every single book of hers and almost every one is a key-hole cover. My absolute fav has to be the original dollinger series, you cannot find any books better then those

i'm definitely doing this
